Artificial intelligence is rewriting the rules of the workforce, and according to Bill Gates, this is just the beginning. The Microsoft co-founder believes AI will eliminate most jobs and radically transform the global economy. But here’s the good news—three professions seem immune to this technological shake-up… at least for now.
AI Could Reduce the Workweek to Three Days
Imagine a world where you only work three days a week. Sounds like a dream, right? According to Gates, this could become reality as AI automates a massive chunk of today’s jobs. The 40-hour workweek? It could soon be history.
But not everyone will benefit. As AI takes over routine tasks, millions of jobs could disappear. The challenge will be adapting before it’s too late.
Still, Gates identifies three professions that should survive this AI-driven revolution. If you work in one of these fields, you might just be safe.
1. Coders: AI Still Needs Its Creators
You’d think programmers would be the first to go, right? AI can already generate code, so what’s left for humans to do? A lot, actually.
While AI is impressive, it still makes mistakes—sometimes big ones. Human programmers are needed to correct errors, refine algorithms, and push AI development forward. In short, AI needs humans… to create AI.
So if you’re in tech, don’t panic just yet. Your expertise isn’t obsolete—it’s more valuable than ever.
2. Energy Experts: Too Complex for Automation
From nuclear power to renewable energy, this industry is too critical to be left entirely to machines. Engineers, researchers, and technicians play a crucial role in managing infrastructure, making strategic decisions, and ensuring safety.
Think about it—would you trust an AI to run an entire power grid alone? Probably not. Human oversight is still non-negotiable in the energy sector.
3. Biologists: But There’s a Catch…
AI is already diagnosing diseases, analyzing DNA, and even outperforming doctors in some areas. So why does Gates believe biology will survive the AI revolution?
Because the problem isn’t AI—it’s demand. Funding for biology research is limited, and breakthroughs require human intuition and creativity. While AI can process data, it still lacks the ability to drive innovation in the same way scientists do.
That said, biologists will need to evolve—working alongside AI rather than competing with it.
The Future of Work: Adapt or Disappear
Even Gates admits he could be wrong. AI is evolving so quickly that predicting the job market in ten years is like predicting the internet before Google.
One thing is certain: AI is here to stay. The smartest move? Learning to work with AI instead of fearing it. And for those outside these “safe” fields? It might be time to rethink career plans.
What’s Next? AI Beyond Imagination
Gates isn’t just thinking about today’s AI, like ChatGPT. He sees something bigger ahead—a self-aware AI that can think, learn, and improve like a human.
An AI that could make us smarter, more efficient, even immortal. Science fiction? Or an imminent reality?
Until we know for sure, one thing is clear—AI is changing everything. The real question is:
Are you in one of the safe jobs, or is it time for a career upgrade?
I have a very good friend in head chef/manager position at a retirement home. He replaced himself with ChatGPT by having it create the entire menu for him, fill out his order forms automatically etc. The food is all prepared by the cooks, not the chefs. Don’t listen to Bill Gates, he’s clearly never had a real job.
I don’t think AI should be placed in every job families have to eat and they need a warm place in the winter people will literally die in the streets from lack of good weather disease and people will turn on each other to obtain what they need I think if companies want to give it a go with AI Robots start slow build to 50% not completely,
Bill is a bit too optimistic here. Here are many jobs that will remain.
Mechanics, Soldiers, police, firefighters, pilots, EMS Workers, fitness trainer, physical therapist, basically anything that requires hands on.
Won’t replace organ donors, sperm donors, surrogate mothers, EMTs who run codes, chest compressions. Airplane Marshalls. Undercover cops, judges, para Olympic athletes, etc. More relevant for most is that they won’t replace your parents and children. Stay tight.
Bill Gates is about my age, and grew up just a little ways from my house. Smart and visionary, yes. Wealthy: yes; but I’m not sure he has ever lived in what most of us might call the real world. We were boating by his mansion that sits on an island in Lake Washington (Seattle), and I guess we got a little close, and a security guard literally popped out of the ground and walk out on the Gates dock toward us. This gives a bit of an insight into the world he, probably by necessity, lives in.
I can see this glorified computer controlled Ai automation helping certain tasks to be more efficiently and consistently accomplished, but will it replace virtually every human worker like he apparently claims? How about the plumber that crawls under your house, finds your leak and fixes it, or installs your new sink; electricians stringing the wiring for your new home remodel or addition, or replaces your light switch; landscapers doing your improvement’s & maintenance; finish carpenters and framers. I can see where some areas of endeavor lend themselves to more automation, but many just do not make any sense unless humanoid robots with dexterity equivalent to actual humans are developed and affordable. When that happens maybe we all evolve into obese couch potatoes with diabetes, on publicly funded welfare, and live very short lives? If what he suggests is actually coming, then I think what I am suggesting is also possible.
Why is this not scaring the shit out of everyone? My greatest fear is that AI will someday decide who lives or dies.
Clergy will never be replaced by AI. Sacraments must be performed by human hands.
Good one Bill. First of all I think AI is one of the most dangerous things we’ve seen in along time. Used appropriately it’s probably a good thing, but if anyone thinks humans will be responsible with it that’s laughable. Second I’d like to see AI replace a Logger!
This very scary my opinion .
Plus if jobs 3 days how are we going to live
Bill is just promoting his Ai… Only life’s less important tasks can be given to Ai. Those that need much trust, faith, and love can never be entrusted to Bill’s.
Where is Sarah Connor?
“Why is this not scaring the shit out of everyone? My greatest fear is that AI will someday decide who lives or dies.”
Susan, insurance companies are already using A.I. to do just that, I am afraid.
Haha can’t wait for Bill Gates to call an AI to unplug his toilet.. cuz this is a whole lot of BS
I really hope AI replaces Bill Gates himself.
We need AI to colonize Mars and prepare the planet as the vacation and R & R place for humanity.
We need AI to explore the universe and locate habitable planets for the human race

Bill is scaring everyone. AI as of now but a program and a program can’t perform physical tasks. AI analyzes data and return the requested answer and last time I checked a glorified app can’t mow lawns, fix plumbing, wire a house. If robotics develop the dexterity of humans coupled with AI sure it might be possible but for now AI is just code that processes lots of data real fast and return an answer based on existing data created by humans.
I think what Bill Gates and others are fearing is advanced technology is just that getting more advanced and sophisticated. Sadly a lot of our USA students are falling behind in mathematics and science.
What about teachers? Just plop a robot in front of the little kids? That’ll teach them how to be human? 😰
You forgot construction workers.
How about roofers? :‐—–)
Sorry Bill but you don’t get to decide which jobs AI will take over and which ones won’t. You’re not in control of the planet Bill and most people no longer respect you or your ideology.
Career politicians, especially in African will be the last to be replaced by AI.
Man created AI, if AI wants to destroy livelihood, the same man will destroy it, or relegate it.
AI was made for man and not man for AI.
A1-would really change the course of history, no more billionaires hoarding wealth and leaving starving children, no need for electors, police or military Ai could replace them and program them with one goal.. “Peace” no travel restrictions, slavery, all people would need to do.. is literally allow Robots to work and produce..and people enjoy.. after all, Solomon did say all is vanity right?…
I thought a writer had an interesting idea have robots build a colony on Mars for us. Have them do the things we can’t. Have them do farm work and jobs we need workers for that we don’t have. But I would limit their knowledge so they don’t over learn and take over our world.
Plumbers, mechanics, HVAC technicians, and pretty much all trade workers are safe.
Humans will always be needed in most fields, eg, teaching, training and healthcare.
And what about judges and legislators?
In all things we need the human touch; empathy, compassion, creativity.
AI is not close to replacing everyone’s job. This is just more tech hype from a f’n greedy rich kid.
Do you remember when big data was going to completely transform every facet of human existence? It didn’t, but the hype did help transform the over-valued stock prices of those tech companies.
Bill Gates is a big AI Asshole just like
hIs brothers Musk and Trump all Hitler wannabes and control people and the planet. I SAY FUCK ALL 3 OF THEM…….
BOYCOTT MICROSOFT PRODUCTS
What about therapists? You think you can replicate human emotional connection? 😂
I agree with his preliminary assessment. An upgrade is required for most of us. In what ways can one align with Ai and what are the top positions to explore?
What really pisses me off is that these people are making it more intelligent without really minding the negative effect like unemployment since they got there big cold cash
Honestly any health professional is safe. Ai is great, but you can’t mimick an actual humans intuition. Like when to go left or right around the stomach to get to a bleed. Also compassion genuine compassion that you get from nurses and CNAs and other support staff. I’d rather have a human transport my bed from my room to MRI over a robotic bed. At least I know I’m not alone.
Didn’t we say this about computers not too long ago?
Am I confused here? When AI replaces most people in the work place who will be the consumers of the products and services they create since as we will all be broke?
I think we can relax for a bit folks… Love BG’s optimism around AI, but it still can’t get spell check right, let alone replace all of the hands-on manual jobs. As for the more complex jobs which require nuanced human interaction, I was quite amused by the humanoid “bots” at the Sphere in Vegas. However, they required a real human to adequately interact with the audience. Umm… wouldn’t let AI drive my car or clean my house any time soon, lol!
You forgot one important job. Where there are computers there are computer technicians fixing all the machine problems. AI may be able to diagnose the problem, but who is going to find the parts?
Am worried we are going to be jobless,be controlled by machines and the very rich who make them. Anyway for the world is changing we have to change too.
It is a known fact that people who have more free time (ie, shorter work week) spend more money. Regardless of that, if literally millions of jobs will be lost to AI, where will people find work? This is something that is never mentioned. I, personally, have had 14 instances where I have asked an AI chatbot a question and in every case the answer given was totally wrong or completely useless. In my opinion, AI is “the ignorance of Man in digital format”.
