“The Joy of Why” Podcast from Quanta: Ideas and Discoveries of Leading Scientists

Joy of Why Podcast

The Joy of Why Podcast , new from Quanta magazine: noted mathematician and author Steven Strogatz focus on the ideas and discoveries of leading scientists and mathematicians. In this episode, the Nobel Prize-winning Harvard biochemist Jack Szostak reveals that “a key molecule implicated in the origin of life is now thought to be cyanide. If that’s correct,”  Strogatz observes, “how ironic that a molecule so deadly today may have been so vital at the beginning.” The episode with theoretical physicist Sean Carroll suggests “that something strange is happening in the bedrock of reality: Space and time are somehow emerging from something even more fundamental, something ineffable and quantum mechanical at its heart.”

“Deeply Compelling” –Weird Existence of Primordial Black Holes in the Early Universe

4-blackhole

Astronomers studying the motions of galaxies and the character of the cosmic microwave background radiation came to realize in the last century that most of the matter in the universe was not visible. About 84 percent of the matter in the cosmos is dark matter, much of it located in halos around galaxies. It was dubbed dark matter because it does not emit light, but it is also mysterious: it is not composed of atoms or their usual constituents like electrons and protons.

Black Hole

“Black holes of such mass should not even exist in our galaxy, according to most of the current models of stellar evolution,” said Liu Jifeng, astronomer at the National Astronomical Observatory of China and first author of a 2019 study of  a black hole known as LB-1,  discovered lurking at the far side of the Milky Way with a mass that is around 70 times larger than our sun with an orbiting blue monster, a star eight times the size of the sun.. “LB-1 is twice as massive as what we thought possible. Now theorists will have to take up the challenge of explaining its formation.”
