Origin of Earth’s H2O –“Billions of Tons of Water-Packed Asteroids”

Earth's Oceans

“Our calculations indicate that, coinciding with the so-called ‘Heavy Bombardment’ produced by the gravitational destabilization of the main asteroid belt, billions of tons of carbonaceous chondrites reached Earth about 3.8 billion years ago. And they did it transporting in their fine matrices water and other volatile elements in form of hydrated minerals”, says Josep M. Trigo-Rodríguez at the Institute of Space Sciences.

Ceres –The Organic Dwarf Planet: “It’s Like a Chemical Factory”

Ceres Dwarf Planet

“With these findings, Ceres has gained a pivotal role in assessing the origin, evolution and distribution of organic species across the inner solar system,” said Southwest Research Institute scientist Simone Marchi. “One has to wonder about how this world may have driven organic chemistry pathways, and how these processes may have affected the make-up of larger planets like the Earth.”

“What Lies Beneath” –NASA 1st Scientific Deep Dive of Mars Interior Mysteries

“Our measurements will help us turn back the clock and understand what produced a verdant Earth but a desolate Mars,” said Bruce Banerdt, who leads the Insight mission, prior to Monday’s landing at the Elysium Planitia, a flat, smooth plain devoid of rocks and hills, 373 miles north of the Curiosity rover.

Mars and Earth –“Star-Crossed: A Warning from the Red Planet”

“Earth and Mars were molded out of very similar stuff,” said Bruce Banerdt, InSight’s principal investigator at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, which leads NASA’s Insight mission. “Why did the finished planets turn out so differently? Our measurements will help us turn back the clock and understand what produced a verdant Earth but a desolate Mars.”
