“Three Supermassive Monsters” –Discovered At Core of an Odd Galaxy

NGC 6240

Like an ancient mythological beast, an international research team led by scientists from Göttingen and Potsdam proved for the first time that the irregular galaxy NGC 6240 contains three supermassive black holes. The observations (above)  show the black holes close to each other in the core of the galaxy. The study points to simultaneous merging processes during the formation of the largest galaxies in the universe.

“99.999% of the Speed of Light” –Gamma Ray Explosion With Highest Energy Ever Observed

Gamma Ray Burst

“Scientists have been trying to observe very-high-energy emission from gamma-ray bursts for a long time,” explained lead author Antonio de Ugarte Postigo of the Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía in Spain about new observations from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space of the gamma-ray burst GRB 190114C. “This new observation is a vital step forward in our understanding of gamma-ray bursts, their immediate surroundings, and just how matter behaves when it is moving at 99.999% of the speed of light.”

“They’re Out There” –Most Likely On Exo-Earths of Binary Star Systems

Alpha Centauri Star Systemm

“They’re out there,” goes the common quip about extraterrestrials. It would seem more likely to be true in light of a new study by astrophysicists at the Georgia Institute of Technology on planetary axis tilts that modeled a theoretical twin of Earth into other star systems called binary systems because they have two stars. They concluded that 87% of exo-Earths one might find in binary systems should have axis tilts similarly steady to Earth’s, an important ingredient for climate stability that favors the evolution of complex life.

Planet Earth Report –Space Radar Reveals “North Korean Nuke Test Equal to 17 Hiroshimas”

Space Radar

The Royal Astronomical Society reports today that North Korea withdrew from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons in 2003. It subsequently developed nuclear weapons, with five underground nuclear tests culminating in a suspected thermonuclear explosion (a hydrogen bomb) on 3 September 2017 estimated to be equivalent to 17 times the size of the bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. Now a team of scientists, led by Dr K. M. Sreejith of the Space Applications Center, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), have used satellite data to augment measurements of tests on the ground.
