Today’s stories range from “Will our remote progeny be the first intelligences to spread through the galaxy? Or will they encounter something already out there, whose origins lie on a planet around an older star where evolution had a head start over us? to Event-Horizon Telescope astronomers set to announce major discovery about the center of Our Milky Way Galaxy, and much more. The Galaxy Report” brings you news of space and science that has the capacity to provide clues to the mystery of our existence and adds a much needed cosmic perspective in our current Anthropocene Epoch.

Could it Answer the Question: “Are We Alone?” –Profile of Exoplanet K2-18b

NASA Exoplanets

In the 1980’S Carl Sagan observed that the human species had reached the shore of the cosmic ocean. A mere two decades ago, astronomers debated the existence of planets beyond our solar system. Today, astronomers estimate that an average of one to two planets orbit every star in the Milky Way –That’s an estimated 400 billion planets.  NASA recently confirmed that the number of discovered exoplanets just ticked past the 5,000 mark, representing a 30-year journey of discovery led by NASA space telescopes. In the absence of evidence, defying intuition and common sense, scientists continue to doubt he existence of life, either microbial or advanced, beyond our pale blue dot. Our scientific imagination, Einstein was fond of noting, is a preview of coming attractions.

Stephen Hawking on “The Ultimate Migration” -Will the Human Species Be Able to Adapt to Life Beyond Earth?

Human Exoplanet Migration

Before his death in 2018, Stephen Hawking predicted that the world’s mounting population will consume enough energy to render the world a “ball of fire” within 600 years. Speaking via video in 2018 at Beijing’s Tencent WE Summit, Hawking declared that humans must “boldly go where no one has gone before” if they wish to survive another million years.

“Against All Odds” –Unique Star System with Six ‘Suns’

TESS Mission

“The system exists against the odds,” said Brian Powell, a data scientist at NASA’s High Energy Astrophysics Science Archive Research Center about the source of starlight that was mysteriously brightening and dimming some 1,900 light-years away. The source, named TIC 168789840, is a system of three pairs of binary stars: three different stellar couplets revolving around three different centers of mass, but with the trio remaining gravitationally bound to one another and circling the galactic center as a single star system.
