Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, and Sam Altman Announce the End of Smartphones — But Tim Cook Isn’t Playing Along

Four tech giants are moving to replace the smartphone with devices that sound straight out of science fiction. From brain chips to digital skin, the future may already be underway. One major player, though, is refusing to let go.

In recent months, a quiet shift has taken shape across Silicon Valley. Some of the most powerful voices in technology are floating a vision for the future that excludes the very device that has defined the digital era for more than a decade: the smartphone. For Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Sam Altman, and Bill Gates, the next wave of innovation doesn’t involve a sleeker phone — it replaces it altogether.

Each of them is backing different technologies that promise to render smartphones obsolete. From brain implants to digital tattoos and augmented reality glasses, their ambitions suggest a world where humans interact with devices not through touchscreens, but directly through thought, vision, or even skin. It is a radical break from the present — one not everyone is ready to embrace.

Neural Links and Digital Tattoos

Elon Musk, the founder of Neuralink, is advancing the concept of brain-computer interfaces, which allow users to communicate with machines using only their thoughts. According to the company, two human subjects have already received implants. The aim is to remove the need for physical interaction with devices entirely — no tapping, no swiping, not even speaking. Instead, thought would drive action.

Bill Gates is championing a different kind of interface. He is backing Chaotic Moon, a Texas-based company developing electronic tattoos. These devices, worn directly on the skin, are designed to collect and transmit data through nanosensors. Their applications range from health tracking to communication and geolocation. The tattoos effectively transform the body into a digital platform, without the need for handheld devices.

Vision-First Computing

Meta’s chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg, is placing his future on augmented reality glasses. He predicts that by 2030, these glasses will take over as the primary computing device, replacing the smartphone. The concept is to overlay digital content directly onto a user’s field of vision.

Instead of looking down at a screen, people would experience notifications, navigation tools, and communication features through transparent displays worn on their faces. This strategy aligns with Zuckerberg’s broader ambitions in the AR and metaverse space. The goal, he has said, is to “step beyond screens” and redefine the way people engage with the internet and each other.

Apple’s Alternate Path

While competitors set their sights on revolutionary tech, Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, is sticking with what works. The company recently released the iPhone 16, a device that incorporates advanced artificial intelligence to enhance usability but maintains the familiar form factor. Cook continues to emphasize refinement over reinvention, arguing that smartphones remain central to everyday life.

Apple’s strategy focuses on incremental innovation, improving existing products while introducing new technologies like AR and AI gradually. Cook’s philosophy diverges from his peers in that he views the smartphone not as something to be replaced, but as a core platform to build upon. “We’re committed to improving what people already use,” Cook has indicated in public remarks, favoring evolution over disruption.

This growing divide represents more than just product design — it’s a split in thinking about how humans should interface with technology. Musk, Zuckerberg, Altman, and Gates are promoting bold transformations that embed technology within the body or integrate it seamlessly into our surroundings. Apple, on the other hand, is reinforcing the smartphone’s role by adapting it to emerging demands without altering its core.

  1. These “promises” are not happening any time soon. The acceptance of brain implants to replace a phone are not going to be adopted by almost anyone in the next decade, if not much longer. They are talking about very expensive technology so far that costs thousands of dollars (even the glasses cost about $5000 right now). So maybe the limited uber wealthy can afford these toys to replace a phone, but the glasses have been out for over 5 years now and the price has hardly moved, and the adoption has gone nowhere for the masses – just selected wealthy and business use cases. In this case Apple is right to pursue what people can afford, and affording a $1000 phone is more reasonable (still expensive) compared to these new technologies.

  2. Of course everybody but Apple is promoting the end of the smartphone. Apple rules the smartphone market and everyone else wants to find the next big thing. Certainly some of these technologies could find their place in the world, but they are a ways off from becoming successful in the marketplace, not to mention even becoming a viable product in the first place. I can totally see a future for direct neural-computing interfaces and augmented reality. But the concepts themselves are not enough to make a successful foray into the world. It takes a complete user experience and while all these other companies may be good at engineering, it’s going to take a company like Apple, who understands user experience, to bring something successful to the market – just like Apple did with the personal computer, the graphical user interface, the iPod/iTunes, the iPhone, and the iPad. History will likely repeat itself and while all these other companies may help develop the raw technology of future computing, Apple will develop the polished product that will be successful in the market.

  3. Yeah I’ve seen enough sci-fi films and tv shows to know that having technology directly fused into the human body is not a good idea! Too many risks…. Plus I’ve seen way too many people put on AR glasses and what not and walk into objects and people. No thank you.

  4. These people sre psychotic. Electronic tattoo’s smh . They can’t even get smart glasses or vr to be main stream .

  5. Apparently, our tech overlord masters have deluded themselves into believing that they are the market itself. A few years’ worth of being the lucky few to land on top of the digital revolution… fueled by stock purchasing wealth and science fiction dreams which came to be before they were even born, has them now believing they can just replace everyone’s job and decide what we will be buying. Not happening, the original corporate success was one part luck and one part psychopathy, now the luck is all played out and humility is coming for them right quick.

  6. Never ever will I believe any of the above is good for humans and I refuse to put anything inside my body or on it to replace my cell phone.

They must be nuts to think ppl will approve of this.
God did not need this junk and I’m with him.

  7. This tracks as Apple is typically 5 years behind everyone else in tech. They round the edges, dumb it down for their base, and call it new.

  8. Absolutely psychotic! Does anyone remember Nazi Germany & the tattooing of the Jewish people? Of course that would be Gates’ choice. I can support Musk to the point of helping overcome paralysis, but that’s as far as it should go.
No one is implanting anything in my body, not even the COVID vaxx. Orwell was a head of his time, not 1984 but 2084.

  9. Hahaha! The world is going crazy!!! I don’t doubt any of those inventions will be possible. I only doubt they will take centre stage. There should be a limit to what humans can choose as a lifestyle. Adaptation of those inventions is what shall be at stake. May Allah save the human race. Aamiin.

  10. These people need to be sent on Mars. This is total control and surveillance. Just imagine making love and someone monitoring your activity. Nasty. Even now Alexa in my office and Siri are interfering when I’m talking to other people I didn’t ask them anything.

  11. The smartphone could be replaced right now with a smartwatch and pair of headphones, but the tech giants won’t allow that without a connected smart phone because it’ll affect the bottom line.

  12. It’s all written in the Bible. I just didn’t think it would happen in my generation.

  13. Lol! No way tattoos, brain implants or barely functional AR glasses are ever going to be market leaders. Buy Apple stock & have the last laugh when all these uber rich idiots take a beating in the market. Being rich doesn’t make you smart. You may be smart or you may just be a product of circumstance.

  14. Sounds like an interesting article, too bad ads literally take up my entire screen and I can’t even read it.

  15. Chip your pet, not yourself. Especially with something that can be used by others or AI to directly speak to your brain.

  16. “Also he compels all, the small and the great, and the rich and the poor, and the free men and the slaves, to be given a mark on their right hand or on their forehead [signifying allegiance to the beast], and that no one will be able to buy or sell, except the one who has the mark, either the name of the beast or the number of his name.”

  17. Yeah, I’m gonna let Elon Musk touch my brain so I can be the ‘Cybertruck” of humans. Hahahahahaha. Keep dreaming little man.

  18. I can only imagine why people thought about smart phones and computing 50/100 years ago… And the world keeps spinning.

  19. Basically, people don’t like their privacy to be invaded. Each of these technologies violates privacy. Allowing a prosthesis to be placed between our heads is very far-fetched, or even a tattoo.

  20. …and here I was going to get a house phone again because my cell service sucks so bad and I really can’t stand the constant deluge of garbage that I have to sift through just in order to use the cell phone. Just think, you social media addicts can just float around in your altered realities all day and have your “smart tattoo” masturbate you continuously!

  21. Thank god for Apple I want smartphones! The others don’t even ask what we want!!!!!

  22. Of course they are now promoting this and making it a topic. It’s all part of the militarized plan that has existed for decades. It’s called transhumanism and it’s a type of slavery most don’t understand yet. These “leaders” are following orders to continue their cushy lifestyle while humanity is put on advanced chains.
They will brainwash the young… that is always the plan since the young have zero understanding of lessons from the past and think all this is normal, popular, better than what was done before.

If those of us that know-don’t fight and speak out, humanity and freedom is doomed.

  23. For being such smart people, they sure are idiots
Just another way to take control of everybody

  24. I’m not putting anything in my body or on my skin. They are out of their minds , it’s the mark of the beast and I’m not doing it !! I’m for GOD !! IN JESUS NAME I PRAY THIS WILL NEVER HAPPEN!!!! I will stick to my smartphone,

  25. Anyone thinking we’re just going to ditch smartphones is seriously kidding themselves. It’s like they haven’t got a clue how much these things are baked into pretty much everything we do, day in and day out. Maybe they’re just so loaded and off in their own world that they can’t imagine a phone being used for anything other than scrolling through social media. But that’s just not reality for most folks.
Seriously, do they not see that our phones are basically our wallets now? We’re tapping to pay for coffee, groceries, bus rides – all that NFC magic. And banking? So many people only do their banking on their phone. Then there’s all the work stuff, the school apps, keeping track of assignments or connecting with teams. It’s not just about fun and games, though let’s be real, the mobile gaming scene is massive, with billions of players! Why would all those people just switch to something else?
The truth is, our smartphones are like the ultimate Swiss Army knife for life. They do so much for us. To even think about replacing them, you’d need some kind of super-tool that’s way more powerful and can do everything a smartphone does, but like, ten times better and easier. It’s not just about a cool new gadget; it’s about replacing something that’s become central to how we live, work, pay for things, and even get around. So yeah, good luck with “eliminating” the smartphone, it feels like they’re missing the whole picture of how vital these devices have become for almost everyone.

  26. i understand these techbros want this but when meta, x and others are losing customers and interest exactly because humans dont want to be part of this always online biomass, theres no way any sort of notable fraction of people are willing to take any brain chips or the sort. even wearable glasses are a stretch and raise a question “why?”.

techbros also forget that even if smartphone is sort of new invention, its based on the same exact pc/television/landline phone/book idea that are decades or centuries old. its an object you can take from the table or pocket, do something, and then put it back. a semi-permanent chip is totally different thing

  27. And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
    Revelation:13:16

  28. I will never get or trust or purchase anything an anti American supporter like Mark Zuckerberg promotes. Do everyone in the United States of America a solid and move to China and become a citizen in their country. Our country doesn’t need anymore trader we have democrats. I will support apple on this if I’m not born with it or need it to support my life , like the Covid vaccine, don’t need it, want it , definitely won’t get it.!

  29. Every person listed in this article is retarded if they think any of these ideas will catch on this century. Nobody except rich tech bros want smart glasses, nobody is going to choose to get a tattoo that tracks them everywhere they go, and certainly very few people are going to let corporate giants install stuff into our brains. Fucking delusional takes.

  30. This is just advertising for Apple. What about the other phone manufacturers, Samsung, Huawei, etc? You make it sound like iPhone is some good choice when other phones are better and still producing. Don’t forget Apple was caught slowing down their phones so people would buy new ones. And don’t forgot about the child labor sweatshops either. Did you hear that Elon Musk is considering building an X smartphone? Yea, possible partnership with Samsung. Your article is just incomplete. Lastly, the neural link bit conveniently left out the fact that it’s only been tested on a few paraplegics. The actual scary thing is anything to do with Bill Gates. In this case him trying to brand people like cattle, with a tattoo.

  31. Most of us will be dead before majority of that will be implemented, which I agree, it will eventually become and bio-cybernetic world, but those CEOs and 95% of us won’t be alive for its main stream debut. However, innovation at Apple is no where near the place it was ten years ago. And think about, why will we need cellphones if most of us will work from home and have advanced in-home AI infused communication systems. The cell is on its way out so to speak, but not just yet.

  32. Where these technologies are showing themselves to be not good for the individual, these tech leaders are showing they are not good for societies, not sure where we are heading is where we want to be ,

  33. Im planning a radical new idea myself. Ditch it all (its just ad sales bottomline) and “connect” to nature..

  34. I’m still trying to figure out the “Smart Phone!” Hahaha. I think they have more money than they know what to do with it!

  35. Looks like I may be switching finally to an iPhone, no way in hell am I getting an implant or a tattoo m

  36. I would not trust a nural implant developed by Musk anymore then I do with trumptydumpy with our civil right and following the laws that the people have to follow, we have all watched the movies where nural implants went wrong they became sychpantic zombie followers/worshippers. I got my own voices in my head to follow, I don’t need anyone else’s to help me make bad decisions.

  37. I think these sci-fi dreamers would do good to ask the USERS WHAT *THEY WANT or what they would, or would *NOT, purchase! This is absolute MADNESS & only a handful of ppl would put this crap IN OR ON their bodies!!
I have a feeling these inventions will be a MASSIVE LOSS for these out-of-touch companies!

  38. I may not totally agree with the replacement of my valuable very personal things like smp.whats wrong with you’s whats the matter? these may be too expensive on my part to avail and avail these kind of evolving and upgrading technologies today and for the future do we really need this kind of updates No, im not! I valued and restored my invested appliance and some antiques things

  39. Getting a tattoo and implanting chips in your brain are worse than the prying eyes of the Chinese Communist Party.

  40. Tattoos are taboo to me me and I don’t put on eye glasses, besides, anything that interferes with God’s creation is anathema to me. So hand gadgets are my option

  41. Money talks. Does the ordinary Joe really think these money mongers are considering possible extenuating issues such as a possible interference with the biology of humans? Their tests will more than likely have a margin for random issues & other unforseeables but the bottom line is if you don’t have the green to even get in the game to offer alternatives, you’re out
Besides, Gates has already stated the population needs to be decreased so why would he even care if there are issues with the fragility of life, physically or mentally? The only concern here is how much power & money can be had and made.

  42. Well, you know, until he’s recent actions, I might have gone NeuroLink cuz I’ve always been a bit cyberpunk myself and that is just so Ghost in the Shell.
I like the idea of the Digital Tattoo. The SmartGlasses are cool but it has already been proven how very bad these things can be in the wrong hands.
I personally say Digital Jewelry. We already have that technology going, why not broaden the spectrum?
And on top of that, in accordance so far based on this article, none of the options seem to really catered to the Gamers! After all, that’s what most people are doing on their phones!!!

  43. Please stop this idea at all cost. I do not want anything im a body that will transmit anything. Old fashion phones are just fine. We gotta wake up. All of this is control.

  44. The coming generation might be tempted to accept these radical changes, however odd, and especially if they are accessible at cheap prices. Until then I don’t see adopting these direct neural computing interfaces and augmented reality.

  45. Hell no. First of all they would use your thoughts for ads and be able to know where you are at all times and what you are doing/thinking without any ability to keep anything to yourself. There are so many issues with handheld devices still why would I allow someone to impa t something into my brain and who is doing the surgeries 😆.

Even the tattoo one is bad, how would you even do that. Then glasses too, wtf. People will be distracted by all of these and the rest of us will have no warning or ability to know that someone is using the devices while driving. The answer isnt implanting or permanently becoming a smartphone yourself.

They promote it as a way to not be separated or distracted by devices but it will just make the issue worse and how do you play games then, by thought, then who won’t just think that they will win to win, if its a golf or shooting game you would just put the ball or bullet right where they should go.

I need to be able to get away from the world sometimes and its ability to reach me at any moment.

I dont want to have my location exposed at all times and its already been proven that the wifi signals mess with us and cause cancer in some cases so let’s just direct extra wifi signals into our brains and body, yup, sounds like a great idea lol.

This is going to entertaining when the lawsuits start 😆 although I’m sure you’ll have to sign some ridiculously long agreement of which anyone willing to attach these devoces to their bodies and brain would be too ignorant to read or question it. I wonder how much they get paid. I bet he found some homeless people or drug addicts and paid them to participate and be experimented on like guinea pigs.

Worst of all whats to prevent the devices from being used for mind control and what about viruses. If your hacked them what 🤣 🤣 🤣.

  46. I can imagine this technology comes out, and the number of car crashes rising higher than ever. People already have short attention spans, also have a bad habit of texting and driving, I feel this would simply promote it!

  47. All this so called technology, is nothing but, inviting the
    Antichrist in ….
And people don’t even See it…
    So Sad ……
This world needs the Lord JESUS……. Repent Now, And give your life to JESUS Christ of nazareth
Because the devil got these peoples mind just were he wants them.

  48. Meta should spend some time looking into why false accusations are being made to uses of Facebook. Their accusations are draining and have the potential to be life shattering. Explanation would be appreciated by someone who has that written in their job description.

  49. Freaks….Absolute insanity……rich white folk with nothing better to do……Demonic visions in so many ways here….RE

  50. Their goal is for constant interaction. Constant ad bombardment. Constant interfacing. Social media has already distracted, manipulated, and altered the perceptions of people significantly to the point of social upheaval. Further enhancing that feels like putting it all on the brink of collapse.

What people need are massive detoxing from it… but the companies need you to embrace and be further entrenched so they can be further enriched.

  51. Wondering what we are going to need to power these “futuristic” neural tech stuff and at what cost. Is it just going to be the one-time acquisition of the implant, Digi -tattoos or the glasses…Buying data for smartphones is quite expensive, however would these direct and “Smarter” interfaces har our other hidden costs with relatively far-reaching health implications? More questions on my mind.

  52. Don’t be deceived thse guys are trying to hide the true picture of 666.the physical mark on your forehead or hand is the economic and social pressure impossed in you ,whether poor or rich.if you have gone to endor.(witch craft ) becoZ of that pressure (getting rich being celebrity have power you have accepted 666)

  53. What about *psychedelic drugs*? They are hhf ultimate technology. Integrating them into computer electronics will be the infinite innovation especially wearable computers as first mentioned by thad burrows from MIT in the early 90s.

    Mark Buckingham, not Zuckerberg.

  54. These guys are ‘under-orders’ morons. What’s puzzling to me is how|why Tim Cook has not joined in???
Another essential answer I need is why have these ‘under-orders’ morons deviated from applying the proven ‘MAYA’ marketing principle?
Good luck all …I am staying ‘Off-Grid’!

  55. The mark of the devil! They can keep all that BS, I will stick with my smart phone!

  56. Who will allow achip to be inserted in his/her body, that means forcing people and violating human rights by all means🤔

  57. Ridiculous. No one but a complete idiot would want some sort of brain implant. And a digital tattoo? Where’s the display? It sounds more like a fancy fitness tracker. And who wants to wear glasses if they’re not medically necessary? I wear glasses and I HATE it!

  58. This will never be accepted. Between mass marketing, political, spam, scam and these investors pushing products to further engorge their personal wealth, we are all best to ditch the smartphone already and return to landlines with less mind control.

  59. Number six six six on the fore head and your arms how will it be done and who will be doing it..?it’s Satan driving these technology to give marks to those who will be going to Hell…..therefore stay Alert and reject some things

  60. Very risk in middle east it will be melting…. God eays. Also individual attitude is risk… Justice for asian countries….please. …

  61. There are only about 4 people that have left comments who are not utterly batshit insane.

Mark of the beast, nazi tattoos, covid vaccine, cancerous wifi, mind-control, Chinese Communist Party spies, trader[sic] Democrats, nural[sic] implant zombies, homeless people and drug-addicts used for experiments, militarized transhumanism… and I could go on.

It’s not these corporate talking heads that are the nutters. It’s you lot. You’re so deep in the paint, you’ve left the normal world behind and imagined for yourselves a whole new, far scarier one.

What is funniest, though, isn’t your lunatic ravings, it’s the fact that you write all this stuff on your smartphones. The ones with the GPS chips, the microphones, and the cameras that are always tracking, listening, and watching.

The ones you never put down.

  62. Solomon, I agree with you totally that this guys want to introduce the mark of the beast 666. Everyone should be at alert.

  63. All I see is a way to make humans more like robots taking out the physical communication and these bozos making billions of dollars not caring about the dangers of how easily a device could become infected and or malfunction. Are we going to have to go to a local shop to be plugged in for a firmware update also, I don’t trust any of this especially Elon after he has been selling said brand new vehicle but they have been sitting in airport overflow parking for months

  64. None of these “tech giants” are phone producers except for Cook (and he’s redundant because, Apple.)
None of these new engagement electronic faculties will replace phones. They’re simply phone plug-ins or digital prosthetics. They’re meant for specific tasks that augment their platform.
Cell phones are a LONG way away from being ended. Not in our lifetime anyway.

  65. Fu*k those techs, Mr Cook keep making those handheld devices, your market is beyond destruction, we will keep buying them…

  66. The one thing all these big thinkers and dreamers don’t factor in will kill their big plans. Climate change and the resulting disasters.

  67. Just a small point for the folk going on about tattoos; you all seem to be forgetting that nowadays we have WEARABLE tattoos – ones you can, by definition, also remove. They make a lot more sense than what you seem to be imagining, actual ink-under-the-skin, needle -gun, tattoos.
Not saying I support them, mind- this smartphone steals enough of my life aready!

  68. These are actually the marks of the beast.
How can I replace my phone with a Chip 😭😭.
It’s obvious the end time is near. Things heard around the world nowadays is just scary 😰😰😰.
    May God help us 🙏.

  69. How would one be able to decompress with notifications happening 24/7 right in your face.

I can shut my phone down for the night.

Plus, I’m not big on needles.

  70. smart fones and screens can’t be replaced, and that’s simple truth… digital tattoos, smart glasses, whatever… smartphones can’t be replaced.
same was said about laptops when the pads arrived in grand style… yet the laptop is still ruling that space.

  71. Terminator! Anybody read the book or seen the movies? How did it all start? AI!

  72. “smart fones and screens can’t be replaced”

I’m wearing xreal air right now. I haven’t used my phone screen directly since I bought them.

Ray Ban have already made designer versions for Meta AI.

    This is happening, guys.
