“They were sharp,” said the JPL’s John Trauger, of the images Hubble captured after astronauts fixed a fatal flaw in its primary mirror discovered soon after the space telescope’s launch in 1990 . “And it wasn’t just that we had pictures that looked amazing, it was that we were making new discoveries right away. There were things in the images that we’d never seen before.”

Gravitational-wave researchers increasingly think that globular clusters, dazzling, celestial “snow globes” populated with hundreds of thousands of closely packed stars, harbor dark “hearts,” loaded with dozens to even hundreds of black holes–by far the greatest concentration of these exotic objects found anywhere in the universe.
