Our Solar System –“Is a Rosetta Stone We Can Use to Decipher Alien Worlds”

“We use our own solar system and all we know about its incredible diversity of fascinating worlds as our Rosetta Stone,” said co-author Lisa Kaltenegger, associate professor of astronomy and director of the Carl Sagan Institute. “With this catalog of light-fingerprints, we will be able to compare new observations of exoplanets to objects in our own solar system—including the gaseous worlds of Jupiter and Saturn, the icy worlds of Europa, the volcanic world of Io and our own life-filled planet. “Leak in the Biological Pump” — May Have Warmed the Climate for Past 11,000 years, Encouraging Human Civilization

“We often refer to the Southern Ocean as a leak in the biological pump,” said Daniel Sigman, the Dusenbury Professor of Geological and Geophysical Sciences at Princeton University, who found that an increase in the Southern Ocean’s upwelling could be responsible for stabilizing the climate of the Holocene, the period reaching more than 10,000 years before the Industrial Revolution. “Carbon-Dioxide Hell” –NASA Nixes the Greening of Mars for Human Colonization

Although the surface of Mars is inhospitable to known forms of life today, features that resemble dry riverbeds and mineral deposits that only form in the presence of liquid water provide evidence that, in the distant past, the Martian climate supported liquid water at the surface. But solar radiation and solar wind can remove both water vapor and CO2 from the Martian atmosphere. (more…)

“Earth’s Oldest Form of Life Would Reach Out 100-Million Light Years” –More Than the Number of Stars in the Universe”

An astonishing number of viruses are circulating around the Earth’s atmosphere – and falling from it – according to recent research from scientists in Canada, Spain and the U.S. The bacteria and viruses are swept up in the atmosphere in small particles from soil-dust and sea spray. The study marks the first time scientists have quantified the viruses being swept up from the Earth’s surface into the free troposphere, beyond Earth’s weather systems but below the stratosphere where jet airplanes fly. The viruses can be carried thousands of kilometers there before being deposited back onto the Earth’s surface. (more…)
